It manages to take the listener through an introspective journey through the recesses of their mind and soul, but they seem to be trying too hard. Lyrically, it’s a very solid piece of work. Throughout the entire album, they manage to showcase some level of musical talent in the hopes of keeping the sound fresh, but by the halfway point, it started to get beyond boring. Funny enough, they actually try this in “An Endless Voyage” when they suddenly decide to use an, albeit brief, inclusion of death metal vocals, but immediately go right back to the original sound.

Nobody enjoys listening to an album with jarring tonal shifts the likes of classical jazz to death metal unless you have a severe case of musical Tourette’s syndrome. It’s understandable and alright to keep a consistent tone or sound throughout an album. Every song sounds the same while also being different. However, that’s also a major fault with the album. Right off the bat and throughout the album, they engage you with just enough atmospheric tone through their instruments and gentle vocals to make you feel invited into a safe haven. The first thing that popped into my mind was that “dream rock” sounds like a pretentious way of saying that the sound is going to be weaker than a packet of Kool-Aid in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, but from the moment the album starts, you can’t help but feel like they achieved exactly what they were aiming for. Vestascension is a self-proclaimed “dream rock” band hailing from Baltimore, Maryland. Surely that must have been a phrase they’ve heard throughout their life, especially while recording their album. Someone once said, “Success has a simple formula: do your best, and people may like it.” Of course, I didn’t bother to look up who said it to validate the merit of their quote, but I still found it a quite fitting one, especially as I listened to the debut album by Vestascension.
